BLAGOEVGRAD Blagoevgrad is the economic and cultural centre of south-western Bulgaria. Located some 100 km from the capital city of Sofia, Blagoevgrad among many other things is home to the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG). Founded in 1990 in conjunction of the Bulgarian South Western University, English is the main language of instruction and evaluation procedures. Most of the faculty is American scholars on a year out from University in the USA.
Blagoevgrad Region is situated in the south western part of Bulgaria and covers the region of Pirin Macedonia. It is bounded by Kyustendil, Sofia, Pazardzhik and Smolyan regions and it reaches out to the state border with Greece in the south and to the Republic of Macedonia in the west. Its location favours the development of friendly trans-border relations due to the E79 international link road and rail line to Athens and Thessaloniki.
The region covers the area of the mountains of Pirin, Ograzhden, Vlahina and Maleshevska, Belasitza, Slavyanska, parts of the Rhodope and the Rila Mountain ranges. The Pirin National Park is of worldwide importance and is on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage.
Numerous mineral springs (40 % of all mineral springs in Bulgaria) can be found in this region, the beautiful nature and the rich cultural heritage determine the successful development of winter sports and resorts as well as ecotourism, balneaological and cultural tourism. Blagoevgrad features a pedestrian downtown with preserved 19th century architecture and numerous restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and boutiques.
Many cultural opportunities present themselves within the city, including: 1. A theatre, a library, a cinema and an opera house are all situated in the provincial centre, Blagoevgrad. 2. There are art galleries in Bansko, Blagoevgrad and Sandanski plus many small cultural institutions are dispersed around the province. 3. There are 10 museums in the province that preserve the rich historical, ethnographic and archaeological heritage. 4. Cultural events include the Theatre Festival in Blagoevgrad, the Jazz Festival in Bansko and the Melnik Evenings of Poetry.
